On Monday evening in St Mary's Church, Donnybrook, the Archbishop of Dublin will institute the Rev Ted Ardis to the incumbency of Donnybrook and Irishtown in succession to Canon Richard Bertram who has retired from the stipendiary ministry.
He will also be Chaplain to St Vincent's Hospital.
Mr Ardis is a native of Co Leitrim and was educated at the Royal School, Armagh, and at the University of Durham before training for the ministry in Dublin. He was ordained for the curacy of Drumcondra and North Strand and served a second curacy in St Bartholomews and Leeson Park where his rector was the present Archbishop of Dublin. Five years as rector of Ardamine and Kilmanagh in Co Wexford were followed by appointment as Dean of Killala and Rector of Killala, Crossmolina and Ballycastle in 1989.
Mr Ardis comes to his new post with a background of parish life in Dublin, a deep involvement in inter-church affairs from his years in the Diocese of Ferns, and considerable experience of team ministry from five years of caring for a scattered Church of Ireland community in the west.
Today in St Andrew's College, Booterstown, the Dublin and Glendalough Diocesan Committee for Social Action will host an open seminar on suicide at which the principal speaker will be Ms Jean Casey MIACP and the chairman Prof Marcus Webb. In the Synod Hall in Tuam, the Tuam, Killala and Achonry Diocesan Synod will take place, while the new parish centre at Julianstown will be the venue for the Meath and Kildare Diocesan Synod. The Bishop of Cork will preside at a Diocesan Day of Reflection on Ministry, in Rosscarbery, facilitated by Chris Webb, Renewal Officer with the Council for Mission and Ministry of the Church in Wales, while in Ballylesson, Co Antrim, the Fellowship of Contemplative Prayer will hold a Quiet Day in Holy Trinity Church, Drumbo, at which the witness will be the Rev Raymond Fox, Rector of Donegal. Lectures at the Youghal "Through the Ages" conference continue today and tomorrow there will be an ecumenical service in St Mary's Collegiate Church at 12.30 p.m.
Tomorrow the Archbishop of Armagh will be in Ballymena to preach at the 150th anniversary service in St Patrick's Church, Kilconriola, where the rector is Canon Stuart Lloyd. In St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh, the Rev Patrick Irwin will preach at the Friends Festival Service while the Bishop of Cork will preside at the Patronal Festival Service in St Fin Barre's Cathedral which will be followed by tea in the palace.
RTÉ will broadcast a live harvest service from St Brigid's Cathedral, Kildare, at which the preacher will be the Bishop of Meath and Kildare, the Most Rev Richard Clarke.
In Portlaoise, where the rector is the Rev Hilary Dungan, there will be a Sung Eucharist in St Peter's Church. The music will be provided by a new liturgical choir under the direction of Mark Duley. Any parishes interested in having this group sing may ring 093-35236 for further information.
The first Gospel Eucharist of the season will be held in Powerscourt Church on Sunday at 8 p.m. The Gospel Choir which is ecumenical and drawn from the whole community was formed under the leadership of Dr Neville Cox and sings at the Gospel Eucharist on the last Sunday of each month in Powerscourt Church.
The AGM of the Church Education Society will be held on Wednesday at 6.30 p.m. in the College of Education, Rathmines. The Meath and Kildare Mothers' Union will hold their Diocesan Festival Service on Wednesday evening in St Brigid's Cathedral, Kildare, where the preacher will be the Rev Lynda Peilow, Rector of Clonsast.
A new series of "I Believe" talks begin in the parish church of St George and St Thomas, Cathal Brugha Street, Dublin, on Thursday. The first speaker will be Father Seán Healy of CORI. All talks begin at 1 p.m. and soup and sandwich lunch is available.
On Friday the Bishop of Cork will welcome to Ashton School Mr Pat Cox MEP, who will be the speaker at Ashton Day.
