October 1998
The North-Eastern Health Board completes an initial assessment into Dr Neary's record following complaints by two midwives over high rates of Caesarean hysterectomies
December 1998
The Irish Times discloses that concerns have been raised over Dr Neary's activities at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda,
February 1999
The Medical Council removes Dr Neary's name from the Medical Register following a High Court hearing
April 1999
A report commissioned by the North-Eastern Health Board finds that a normal Caesarean hysterectomy rate for a hospital of Drogeda's size in the mid-1990s would have been one a year. The Caesarean hysterectomy rate at the hospital between 1996 and 1998 was 9 per year
November 2002
The High Court finds that Dr l Neary unnecessarily removed the womb of a Co Louth woman after she gave birth by Caesarean section to her first child in 1992. Ms Alison Gough (37), of Market House Lane, Ardee, is awarded just over €273,000
June 2003
The Supreme Court upholds the High Court's findings and reduces the award to Ms Gough, paving the way for at least 65 further legal actions against Dr Neary
July 2003
The Medical Council decides he should be struck off the Medical Register after finding him guilty of professional misconduct over the removing of wombs from 10 patients
August 2003
The Medical Missionaries, which ran Our Lady of Lourdes until 1997, expresses their regret and sorrow "for the pain, sense of loss, hurt and anger of those women who had operations which deprived them of their ability to conceive and have further children"
