Farmers are facing a "fodder crisis" and need a support programme similar to the TB Hardship Scheme, according to the ICMSA deputy president, Mr Pat O'Rourke. "One in five farmers in the severely affected areas have no winter fodder saved and one in two are facing a severe shortage," he said yesterday.
He suggested a payment of £30 per cow per month during the winter would allow the purchase of concentrates and fodder. He also called for an extension of the Family Income Supplement Scheme which could mean payment of up to £163 a week for a family with two adults and four children.
