US President George W. Bush has named Kelloggs chairman and chief executive officer, Mr Carlos Gutierrez, as his nominee to become commerce secretary.
If confirmed by the Senate, the Cuban-born Mr Gutierrez (51) will replace Mr Don Evans, one of several Bush cabinet members to leave the administration after the president's re-election earlier this month.
Mr Gutierrez was six years old when Fidel Castro took power, trapping Mr Gutierrez's family in Miami where they were on vacation.
Mr Gutierrez has been chairman of the board of Kellogg Company since April 2000 and chief executive officer since April 1999.
He rose through the ranks of Kellogg, joining the company in Mexico in 1975 as a sales representative. He and his wife, Edilia, live in Battle Creek, Michigan. They have three children.
