George W. Bush has laid a wreath at the grave of the unknown warrior in memory of those who are "lost but not forgotten".

President George W. Bush attends a wreath laying ceremony at London's Westminster Abbey, today.

The president stood silent, eyes closed and head bowed as a wreath of white carnations was placed on the grave at Westminster Abbey by two US soldiers.

The president did not speak during the four-minute ceremony in the near-empty nave of the abbey.

He was accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs Laura Bush. Among the dignitaries who attended was the president's security chief, Ms Condoleeza Rice.

In inviting the wreath to be laid, the Dean of Westminster Abbey, the Very Rev Dr Wesley Carr, said it was being done in the "spirit of remembrance" and for those who have been "lost but not forgotten".

The ceremony took place ahead of Mr Bush's meeting with families of British soldiers killed in the Iraq conflict
