Newspaper publisher Trinity Mirror says it has agreed to sell its Irish regional newspaper business to private equity firm 3i Group for €6.64 million.
It announced today that seven Irish newspapers were being sold, including the world's oldest continuously published English language newspaper, The News Letterin Belfast, first published in 1737, and The Derry Journaland the Donegal Democrat.
Trinity Mirror put its Irish newspapers up for sale in July as part of a strategic review of its business. Faced with falling circulation at the flagship Daily Mirror, the company decided that the Irish papers were non-core assets.
