Bree falls short by narrowest of margins

Ireland's Andrew Bree missed out on a spot in the semi-finals of the 200 metres breaststroke by just 0

Ireland's Andrew Bree missed out on a spot in the semi-finals of the 200 metres breaststroke by just 0.03 seconds at the World Championships in Barcelona this morning.

The Co Antrim swimmer clocked 2:15.23 in heat nine, his fastest time of the year, but his seventh place finish was not sufficient to progress to the next round. Iceland's Jakob Sveinsson, who clocked 2:15.20, beat him to the last semi-final qualifying place.

There was also disappointment for Cork's Lee Kelleher who finished fifth in her heat of the 200 metres butterfly. Kelleher, who will also go in Friday's 50m butterfly, swam a disappointing time of 2:19.53, well off the pace she is capable of. The Sunday's Well swimmer had qualified in a time of 2:15.00.
