A body found in a remote mountainous area in Co Mayo on Monday may be that of a middle-aged man who went missing about 10 years ago.
The remains were discovered by a man walking at Doughbeg, near the base of Corraune Mountain, Achill, on Monday. A set of keys and glasses were found at the scene.
The decomposed remains were to be removed to Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar yesterday where a post-mortem examination will be held.
Gardaí carried out a detailed examination of the scene yesterday. There was no question of foul play as far as they could ascertain. Although the place where the body was found is uninhabited, there are houses nearby in the townland of Doughbeg.
One theory being explored is that the remains may be that of a local man Michael Cattigan who disappeared in the early 1990s.
Mr Cattigan had been an outpatient attending St Mary's Psychiatric Hospital in Castlebar
