The occupants of some 60 homes have returned home following an overnight security alert in West Belfast.

The occupants of some 60 homes have returned home following an overnight security alert in West Belfast.

The residents were evacuated overnight when the PSNI were made aware of suspicious packages in St James' Avenue, which is close to the city's Park Shopping area.

Two pipe bomb-type devices were defused and police removed some items from the area for further inspection.

There was also a security alert in Ballymena, Co Antrim, late last night. Bomb disposal experts were summoned to Demesne Avenue, near Cairnduff Drive,following an explosion in a phone box.
