Bayern Munich 2 Celtic 1
Dutch international striker Roy Makaay scored twice to break Celtic hearts after Martin O'Neill's side looked on course for a stunning Champions League win at Bayern Munich tonight.
The Scottish giants went ahead through Alan Thompson in the Olympic Stadium, and held that lead until just 17 minutes from time.
But then Makaay, a costly summer signing from Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna, levelled.
And a soft second just four minutes from the end broke the Scottish side.
Celtic made a good fist of things in the opening half with Bayern looking out of sorts after that shock Bundesliga defeat by Wolfsburg on Saturday.
And Celtic went ahead in the 57th minute as Didier Agathe swung an inviting cross towards the back post and even though John Hartson missed it Thompson stole in behind him to head in off the upright and past the despairing dive of Oliver Kahn.
However the hosts rallied and Makaay hauled them level in the 73rd minute with a precise strike which beat Magnus Hedman from the edge of the area.
The winner came four minutes from time - and in cruel fashion.
Makaay sent a ball into the Celtic area looking for Michael Ballack but he missed his header and the cross creeped into the Celtic goal with Hedman stranded.
