The Australian Football League (AFL) has today named their squad for the upcoming Foster's International Rules Series.
Shane Crawford was named as captain of the side that will play the two-Test series against Ireland in Perth and Melbourne later this month.
Crawford, who led Australia to victory in the series in Ireland last year, was confirmed as captain of the 27-man squad today at a media conference in Melbourne and will lead a side picked specifically with pace and youth in mind.
Australian coach Garry Lyon said: "We took a young enthusiastic side to Ireland last year, sprinkled with a few experienced veterans, and they did an outstanding job to win that series under Shane's leadership.
"This year, we wanted to reward form players in the competition who we think can play the International game and the response of the players has been just superb.
"To get 14 guys who have all starred in their respective club 'best and fairests', along with another five guys who placed in the top five, is testimony to the importance that the players are placing on representing their country," he said.
Peter Bell was named as vice-captain for the side that will bid to win a series on Australian soil for the first time, to complement the victories achieved in Ireland in 2000 and 2002.
