Champions League round-up

Dynamo Kiev took a giant stride towards the knockout stages of the Champions League and edged Arsenal towards elimination when they beat the visiting English league leaders 2-1 in their Group B match tonight.

Goals from Maxim Shatskikh (27) and Valentin Belkevich (63) gave Kiev victory after poor Arsenal defending and took them on to six points from their three matches, the same as Inter Milan. Lokomotiv Moscow have four points and Arsenal one.

Kiev sealed the victory when they took advantage of a mistake by Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann. He came out of his area to chest the ball down but only cleared it into the path of Belkevich, who ran on to the loose ball and turned it into the empty net from 20 metres.

Shatskikh had volleyed home from 10 metres in the 27th minute to open the scoring after a mix-up between Edu and Gilberto Silva in the Arsenal defence.

Thierry Henry pulled one back for Arsenal with a close-range shot 10 minutes from time - their first goal in this season's competition - but it was too late to save the Gunners from their second defeat in three Group B matches.

Kolo Toure hit the bar in the third minute of stoppage time but Kiev held on to take the three points.

Celtic striker John Hartson believes his team can still progress in the Champions League despite a 1-0 defeat against Anderlecht in Belgium tonight.

Anderlecht's Dindane Aruna netted in the 22nd minute to leave the Glasgow side rooted to the bottom of their group.

But Hartson believes Celtic, who play Anderlecht at home in a fortnight, can still reach the next phase of the competition.

"There's still enough points to play for," he said.

After losing 2-1 away to Bayern Munich and then beating Lyon 2-0 at home, Celtic dropped to the bottom of their qualifying group with this defeat.

"I thought we played quite well tonight - but we've got nothing to show for it," added Hartson.

"They scored on the break. It's disappointing because they were down to 10 men.

"It's hard to break down 10 men. It's very disappointing because I thought we played quite well and deserved more out of it."
