Gardaí in Cork yesterday stepped up efforts to locate the mother of a baby girl found abandoned in the car park of the South Infirmary hospital in the city.
The baby, who has been called Sophia, is in good health. However, gardaí are concerned about the welfare of her mother, and have appealed for her to come forward.
Sophia was about three days old when she was found in a blue hold-all on the boot of a car in the car park of the hospital at about 1 p.m. on Monday. She was taken to Cork University Hospital.
A Garda spokeswoman said they still hoped Sophia's mother would come forward as they were concerned for her well-being.
"We would renew our appeal for Sophia's mother to contact us. She can be assured she will be treated with compassion, understanding and confidentiality."
