The State’s first 24-hour “adoptathon” or dog adoption event opens in Galway today, hosted by the animal rescue charity Madra. The event aims to find homes for many dogs at Madra’s Connemara-based kennels, while also providing a platform for owners who are on a waiting list to rehome pets due to changed circumstances.

“We encounter many people with heartbreaking stories as to why they can no longer care for their dogs and we really would love to be in a position to help them, so hopefully this event might provide an alternative solution,” said Madra chairwoman Marina Fiddler.

Madra will conduct home checks before rehoming animals. New owners are asked to give an adoption fee of €150 to cover the cost of neutering, vaccinations and other treatments.
