Cork is bracing itself for its biggest Ocean to City race tomorrow when more than 400 entrants will take to the water at Crosshaven in more than 120 different traditional craft and set off on a 15-mile race up to the city centre.
Originally conceived by traditional boat-making group Meitheal Mara in 2005, to mark Cork’s hosting of the European City of Culture, An Rás Mór has continued to grow. This year it will see 14 international crews, including one from Wyoming in the US.
Ocean to City events manager Siobhán McCarthy said this year’s event, which is organised in association with Cork City and County Council, will include Chinese dragon boats, currachs, Celtic long boats and Cornish pilot gigs.
