The Government is to give £1.5 million towards revitalising the mussel industry in Co Kerry, which has experienced serious hardship over the past year.
The Minister of State for the Marine, Mr Hugh Byrne, is to announce the initiative today when he publishes a management system for Castlemaine Harbour, in Co Kerry.
It is understood that the £1.5 million programme will involve a number of measures designed to alleviate the difficulties of shellfish farmers hit by bay closures. It also aims to provide financial assistance which will secure the survival of all farmers in the area.
