My bike and I

What was your first machine and how much did it cost? I am a recent convert to motorcycling and purchased a BMW R1100RT in 2002. Being such a heavy bike it was very different to previous experience but received much support from my instructor John Wheeler.

What attracted you to motorbikes? I have always been interested in motorbikes but increase in commuting times was the final "excuse" to purchase. Since purchasing I have enjoyed freedom, reduction in commuting times and find the experience very relaxing. Relaxing in the sense that driving a 600 lb, 1,100cc bike ensures that you focus on driving and forget all other thoughts!

Is there any biking heritage in your family? My father and father-in-law were enthusiasts and stories from an early age of their exploits including racing in TTs, on such machines as Royal Enfields, Matchless and Triumphs, undoubtedly have had an effect on me.

How did your family react to your decision to take to two wheels? My wife believes it's a premature sign of mid-life crisis. Encouragingly, though, she has recently purchased a helmet.

What attracted you to this particular bike? Comfort of machine and design as tourer were main attractions, as I will increasingly use it to travel to north Tipperary during the summer months. Although a heavy machine, the RT is well balanced, has smooth power delivery and nice comfort touches like power tilt screen, heated grips and ample storage space.

What do you use your bike for? Increasingly I use it to commute to work in the IFSC and between KPMG offices in Dublin. Main use is pleasure and particularly travelling to Terryglass in north Tipperary on Friday evenings and avoiding the Red Cow/Naas dual-carriageway parking lot!

How much do you spend on bike gear? I recognise that motorcycling can have its dangers and good equipment is essential to minimise damage to a priceless piece of machinery - ME! I have not skimped on gear and have purchased protection from head to toe, which are all waterproof and offer good protection in the event of the unforeseen.

What is your next bike likely to be? I quite like the new Pan European and the BMW K1200 but I think I will stay with the RT for some time yet.

What's been your longest journey on the bike? Longest trip so far on RT has been to Tipperary and back but am trying to get more mileage under my belt to attempt the "Iron Butt rally" in aid of Fr McVerry's Arrupe society in June, a mere 1,000 miles in 24 hours!

What would be your dream bike and road trip? I am quite attached to RT at the moment but would quite like a trip to northern Spain on a BMW 1200GT with cruise control.

Have you ever had an accident on the bike? No accidents apart from dropping bike on second day (thanks for the lift John!). Luckily no damage apart from ego!

In the corporate car park, where image is everything, how does the bike rate in the pecking order? I think it has raised an eyebrow or two but it's not quite a boy-racer bike and most people see its practical side. I have seen an increasing number of similar bikes around the IFSC and maybe a few of my colleagues may even follow suit.

Have you ever been mistaken for a courier? No.
