It will not feature on our roads until February but already VW has said it will need to increase production of its latest Golf if it is to meet strong demand. The fifth generation Golf goes on sale in Germany this week.

Under current plans, VW will build 135,000 Golfs this year and expects to build 600,000 next year. VW is banking on the Golf V to significantly boost earnings in 2004 after a year of falling profits.

MAZDA'S NEW MX-5: Is this the new Mazda MX-5? The zoom-zoom boys and girls remain tight-lipped but this two-seater concept will be revealed at next week's Tokyo Motor Show and bears a remarkable resemblance to the iconic roadster.

As reported in Motors last month, the designs for the crucial new model are at the review stage, with the third-generation of one of the world's best roadsters due for launch in 2006-2007. At the show the so-called Ibuki concept will feature similar looks to the proposed new MX-5 but is shorter than the proposed new model. The front feature is just one of six possible looks, but as it is the one making it to the show, it may just be the popular choice at Mazda for now.
