Shop Front: Tim and Dee France returned to Ireland with the arrival of their first baby and have just opened an art gallery of sorts in Dún Laoghaire called The Canvas Works. We say "of sorts" because this is not really a gallery as most know the term.

Tim was a graphic designer in Covent Garden and the images that hang in The Canvas Works rely on his skill as a designer and on a printing process called Giclee. This means the pictures start life as a photograph on a digital file, are manipulated and then printed onto canvas.

Tim takes all the original photographs of nature and landscapes. "The effect is like painting on canvas," he says. Colours are brightened and often taken down to make simple graphic, painterly shapes.

They say their service has much to do with interior design. "The client can be involved in creativity and choose the image, size and colours. We had someone in recently who brought a fabric sample which we were able to match in the colours of the picture they chose."

Images are mostly flowers, abstracted or very close-up, wavy vertical lines or traditional landscapes.

They can also print from photographs supplied. Some will like the style, others find it too harsh, but there's no pretension in what The Canvas Works produces - - the pair are not trying to create great art . And the best part is that prices are very accessible: it's €75 for a 16 in x 12 in image; €120 for a 24 in x 18 in and €290 for 40 in x 30 in. Images can be as large as 6 feet wide.
