Up-and-coming Dublin band The Riptide Movement have beaten hundreds of UK and Irish acts to win a support slot with indie-rockers Doves in London this Sunday.

The quartet entered an MP3 of theirs into the Moo Sessions, an unsigned bands competition run by ice cream giants Ben Jerry’s. Organisers then narrowed down the entries to three acts (including Ireland’s Ham Sandwich), before leaving it to a public vote to decide the outcome. The Riptide Movement emerged victorious and will support the Mancunians at the Summer Sundae festival at the weekend.

Drummer Gar Byrne told The Ticket that such breaks were “vital” to a band at their level. “It gives us the opportunity to do our best and try to gain new fans, too,” he said.

It’s the icing (ice cream?) on the cake for the blues-rock troupe, who will also play several Irish festival dates including Electric Picnic, before heading off to Germany for a 16-date tour. They release their new single Hard to Explain today and are currently putting the finishing touches to their second album at Grouse Lodge.
