"Slow and steady wins the race" is an adage that Broken Social Scene seem to have based their entire output upon. The Canadian supergroup are undoubtedly an "albums" band, and their fourth effort is a similar affair of mostly slow-building tunes with euphoric climaxes. But Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning and company know how to have fun, too. Between the dreamy swoops and sluggish murmurs of songs such as
World Sick
and
Highway Slipper Jam
are gleeful, strident pop tracks
Art House Director
and
Texico Bitches
.
Chase Scene
even uncovers a facet previously unheard in their songbook, an intriguing blend of 1970s sci-fi soundtrack and Fleetwood Mac melodiousness. It's more of the same from the rotating collective, but when they do it so well, it's hard to find fault.
