Overseas visitor numbers targeted to increase from six million to 10 million per annum. The number of domestic holiday trips should be increased from three million to 4.3 million by 2012, with associated revenue rising from €0.6 billion to 1 billion.

Tourism industry needs to assume primary responsibility for restoring competitiveness.

The Government should commit to an inflation target which would be benchmarked to the euro zone average rate. Increases to charges for Government services should be below the current rate of inflation.

A new open skies agreement with the US needs to be negotiated. This would facilitate Aer Lingus, and other airlines, in significantly increasing the number of transatlantic routes.

Immediate should start between Tourism Ireland, airlines, and airport authorities, with a view to developing the new routes.

Dublin Airport terminal facilities should be developed to facilitate fast turnaround airlines.

A regulator should be appointed to the shipping industry, to regulate port charges.

Fáilte Ireland, in partnership with tourism representative bodies, should improve customer relations.

The sector should continue to concentrate overseas marketing expenditure on the British and US markets, which account for 70 per cent of visitor numbers.
