The death has taken place of Mr Frank Benson, managing partner of private planning consultancy firm Frank L Benson and Partners.

Mr Benson (62) represented many major developers, often on controversial projects such as Spencer Dock in Dublin's Docklands.

He was a former chairman of An Bord Pleanala and was chairman and chief executive of the Custom House Docks Development Authority from 1987 to 1990.

He started his career as a planner in Dublin Corporation and, after working for Power Securities, was recruited to chair An Bord Pleanala when it was reconstituted in 1984 - the first non-High Court judge to hold the post.

Two years later he moved on to become chairman and chief executive of the Custom House Docks Development Authority, which had a mandate to develop the IFSC.

He resigned in 1990 as a result of a falling out with the Fianna Fail-appointed board over the proposed construction of a centre block in the IFSC. Mr Benson later returned to the private sector, setting up Frank L Benson and Partners, now one of the largest planning consultancy firms in the State. He is survived by his wife, Pearl, daughter, Orla, and his mother, Eileen.
