Germany's Dax index held its high ground in late trading despite persistent worries over the Russian and Asian financial situations. A break above 5,500 with substantial volumes could buy the market time and prevent a fall back into the correction which saw it lose 6 per cent this week.
Paris CAC-40: 3999.81 (+48.12)
French shares moved higher, boosted by the expected rebound on Wall Street. Trading, however, was thin.

The Milan market maintained the pattern of other European markets, lifted by the gains in Hong Kong and Russia and the opening session on Wall Street.
