The parent company controlling United Air Lines, the leading US carrier, has made an undisclosed cash offer for the ninth-largest carrier, America West, the Wall Street Journal reported yesterday. The paper said that if completed the deal could trigger a spurt in airline consolidation.

The bid by United, according to the paper, would pressure Continental Airlines to exercise its right of first refusal to acquire a share of America West in the event of an actual bid from another company.
