Maths enthusiasts will be interested in the topic of a seminar taking place in UCD next Thursday. The mathematical society's inaugural lecture will address the world's most famous unsolved problem, Fermat's Last Theorem. Professor Yves Hellegouarch of the University of Caen, France, will give his presentation - "Wiles" new approach to Fermat's Last Theorem. It has baffled the sharpest mathematical minds for more than 350 years, and its completion was generally accepted as the mathematical event of the century, generating enormous public interest.

Prof Hellegouarch is a renowned mathematical expert who participated in work leading to the solution of Fermat's Last Theorem. The lecture takes place in Theatre N of the Arts Building at 7.30 p.m.
