The British government's dream that somehow an efficient and profitable railway system would be reborn in private hands seems to have bitten the dust. The Money Programme (Sunday, BBC 2, 7.30 p.m.) examines whether Britain's rail industry can be pushed to provide a modern service or whether the only answer is a huge investment of public money.

Raising the Roof: Mortgages (Monday, BBC 2, 8 p.m.), the fifth episode of Paul Kenyon's investigation into the darker side of housing professionals in Britain, takes on the mortgage industry.
